I think this movie does a great job of depicting realistic highschool relationships, but it probably would have benefited with an extra 10 mins to show how Rikako changed (as it is only implied). She is far from likeable, but I think she's the most interesting character from this movie (and one of the most interesting across all Ghibli movies).

I also feel a bit bad for her because a lot of the girls call her names behind her back, spread rumors about her, tell her how to behave, and try to force her to participate in clubs when she just wants to be left alone (maybe I'm unaware of how schools are in Japan).

That said, I do empathize with her because I've done/said my own share of dumb stuff in high school. For example, when she visits her father we don't see her go up to her room, we only see Taku wait in the lobby. We never actually see anything from her perspective, which makes it harder to care for her (which ties into the movie's theme). I think she's intended to be a realistic portrayal of a teenager, not a sympathetic one. She's just horribly misguided and doesn't stop to think about other people because she's too fixated on her own problems (parent's divorce, forced to move to Kochi). Besides the slapping, she never has any ill intent though. We see her borrow money from Taku without telling him what it's actually for, she lies to Yumi and buys plane tickets to Tokyo instead of Osaka, she calls Taku down to show him off to her ex, and slaps Taku twice (the second time was because he saw the girls harassing her and didn't help).

She's selfish and manipulative thoughout the movie. I think the audience is supposed to dislike Rikako. Taku does care about her though, otherwise he wouldn't have gone to Tokyo so abruptly (Rikako doesn't convince him to go Taku invites himself). Their attraction is almost entirely superficial (as most highschool relationships are). Since they live in Kochi (a laidback rural town) there's intrigue about a girl from Tokyo. Taku and Yutaka like Rikako because she's pretty, smart, athletic, and stands out. As you grow older, you can look back and see how insignificant your problems were and how immature you acted. When you're young, every problem can feel world-ending. Around 1:03:40, Shimizu (short-haired girl) says that she bumped into Rikako and they agreed that their world was too small. The main theme of the story is mentioned at the reunion party. I watched Ocean Waves for the first time a few days ago and I enjoyed it (an unpopular opinion).
